Homemade giardiniera is a thing of beauty. Crisp, crunchy and flecked with spice, the tiny cauliflower florets contrast with the saltiness of mini green olives and the heat of fresh jalapeno rings.

The giardiniera tops homemade Italian beef sandwiches — if you order them hot. You can also order them sweet, or wet, with the bun dipped in the oregano and basil-scented beef juice.

The Beef Guy opened April 13 in The Verandah (3032 Santa Barbara Blvd #201, Cape Coral) in what used to be a cupcake shop. Owners Denise Deeds and Dennis Suchomel were looking to bring a bit of Chicago to Cape Coral. Both owners grew up in Berwyn, Ill.

Gyros (authentically roasting on spits and served with homemade tzatziki sauce), Chicago hot dogs, pork tenderloin sandwiches, and hand cut fries are all stars of the menu, but it's the signature Italian beef sandwiches, made from a closely guarded family recipe, that are bringing in customers.

"It's the cut of the meat, and the slow roasting and the seasoning, and the way we slice it," explained Suchomel, who mans the kitchen. So far, the Italian beef sandwich is their No. 1 seller, and in the first two weeks, they went through 200 pounds of beef.

The Chicago-style hot dogs are made with Vienna skinless hot dogs and topped with mustard, relish, onion, tomato, pickle spear, sport peppers, then topped with celery salt. The Beef Guy also has authentic Italian sausage, served with giardiniera on top.

The bread and rolls are all from Chicago as well, making everything at The Beef Guy as authentically Chicago as possible.

The owners hope to have The Beef Guy gain enough local, loyal customers that it becomes a neighborhood hotspot. Repeat customers have been plentiful, in addition to customers that come in proudly wearing their Chicago shirts (a good mix of Cubs fans and White Sox fans).
